Earlier, this was printed with red ink and contained four pages. This day was very pious day of Holi, which is called as Dol in the language of Bengali. It was first published on March 13th 1922 as an evening daily. Currently, Aveek Sarkar edits this paper. Prafulla Chandra Sarkar, an editor, laid the foundation of this newspaper in the year of 1922. Besides Kolkata, this newspaper is also printed from several other cities of West Bengal state. It enjoys the second rank by readership and circulation.
The chief rival of this newspaper is Bartaman Patrika. Hence, this newspaper has become the top newspaper for Bengalis in India. As per Indian Readership Survey 2012, this newspaper is the most preferred Bengali newspaper in the country. As per Audit Bureau of Circulations, this newspaper has a propagation of 1028 million of copies, thereby making it the greatest circulation in the country.
